Obituary from the Daily Courier, Connellsville, Pa, dated Feb. 26, 1947 submitted by Kenneth O'Neal <kon@hhs.net>
George O'Neal Dies After Flying Emery Wheel Strikes Him
Suffering a crushed chest when struck by a large piece of a disintegrating emery whell at the Woodward Iron Works at 225 North Sixth Street, West Side, George W. O'Neal, 39 years old, of Fourth Street, South Connellsville, died about 15 minutes after being admitted to Connellsville State Hospital Tuesday evening.
The victim was polishing balancing washers, about two and a half inches thick, at the Iron Works. He moved a wheelbarrow load to the emery wheel and placed a number on the table, several in front of the wheel. O'Neil then proceeded to put on his goggles. As he was doing this, the vibration of the speeding emery wheel caused one of the washers to drop into the wheel trough, resulting in the wheel's demolition.
The emery wheel was said to be about six inches long, two and a half inches thick and weighing nearly forty pounds. A piece of about 20 pounds weight flew five feet through the air, hitting O'Neil in the chest and a smaller piece apparently struck him on the side of the head.
Arthur G. Woodward and Henry Reich, who were working about 10 feet away, saw O'Neal crumple and fall as they turned in his direction when the wheel shattered.
They summoned the South Connellsville fireman's ambulance and the victim was rushed to the Hospital where he died about 15 minutes after being admitted. His chest was crushed and his right hip broken. There was a skull injury on the right side.
Assistant Coroner Detective Lawrence A. Haggerty and Patrolman Kenneth E. Louden Made an investigation into the accident.
O'Neil is survived by his widow and two children.
The funeral will be held Friday afternoon with a prayer service (in/at) the home. Additional rites will be conducted at 2:00 in the Assembly of God Church, East Gibson Avenue, South Connellsville, with Rev. (?) Clutter, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be made in Hill Grove Cemetery in charge of Funeral Director Clyde B. Brooks of Indian (Heart? Unreadable) Friends may call at the Home after 7 o'clock tonight.
