Volume III, Issue 2, February, 2003 |
On page seven of last month's issue
of the Newsletter, we displayed a photo of Henry Huffman and his wife Eliza
O'Neal Huffman. In the caption we said that the photo was taken in 1801.
Thanks to numerous TOGA members for pointing out our mistake. First, the
photographic process used in these photos did not exist in 1801; And, secondly,
Henry and Eliza's ages didn't match up. Henry was born in 1801 and Eliza
was born in 1809, so obviously the photo was taken in 1901.
Thanks to our member's sharp eyes
for details.
The O'Neale's of Montgomery County, Maryland
How would you like to look at a map of current day Maryland and point to the spot where our O'Neal Ancestors came from? Bev Crowe and I have been doing a lot of work in this area lately and we'd like to share the results. We know that our 3rd generation of O'Neale's came from "Sugarland Hundred". In colonial days a "Hundred" was an area whose population was sufficient to provide one hundred able bodied men, capable for fighting in the militia.
The Census of Sugarland Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland was taken September 2, 1776. The Census shows:
Name Age Calculated Birthdate
John O'Neal 57 1719
Peter 22 1754
Barton 16 1758
Joseph 10 1766
Margaret 49 1727 (nee Barton)
Margaret 18 1758
Phebe 16 1760
Janet 14 1762
Mary 10 1766
