A partial history of the O'Neals, by Clifford O'Neal
PETER O'NEAL, born 1754, exact date is unknown, in Saint Mary County,
Maryland, Enlisted in the American Continental Army, February 5, 1776.
Came to Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 1778, from 1778 to 1783 was carried
as a "Ranger of the Frontiers, Purchased land in Colerain Township, Bedford
County, Pennsylvania, in 1779. In 1784 married SARAH SPARKS, born April
6, 1767, the daughter of JOSEPH SPARKS, Bedford County, PA.
There were Twelve (12) children born to this marriage, the third child
being JOSEPH O'NEAL.
PETER O'NEAL passed away October 5, 1852, and was buried in a field overlooking his homestead, SARAH O'NEAL, passed away July 23, 1848, and was laid to rest beside her husband PETER O'NEAL. The plot is known as the O'NEAL Cemetery, and is being cared for by the O'Neal Reunion Committee.
JOSEPH O'NEAL, born October 2, 1789, in Providence Township Pennsylvania, settled and farmed in the area. He married DELILAH OTTILA NYCUM, born January 25, 1795, and there were twelve (12) children born of this marriage, the second being BERNARD O'NEAL. (Bernard bought land and farmed in Southampton Township.) JOSEPH O'NEAL passed away May 18, 1860, and he is buried in East View Cemetery, Chaneysville, PA. DELILAH OTTILIA NYCUM, passed away June 25, 1865, and was laid to rest beside JOSEPH O'NEAL in the same Cemetery.
BERNARD O'NEAL, born March 26, 1819, in Southampton Township, married
ELIZABETH LAUDERBAUGH, born October 11, 1819, died in 1859. There were
Six (6) children born from this marriage JOHN O'NEAL BEING THE FIFTH.CHILD.
BERNARD O'NEAL moved to Chaneysville in 1847, and erected a Hotel, which
he operated until 1875. In 1855 he erected a GristMill, a building of Three
Stories, 55 X 40 feet, situated along the Sweet Root branch, located on
Ten Acres of land. Its capacity was Twenty (20) barrels of flour
a day. It remained in operation until the middle 1930s. He also operated
a Four Hundred Forty-Acre farm, engaged in both farming and livestock trading.
He also erected one of the Churches in Chaneysville.Due to the Civil War,
the family of BERNARD O'NEAL was somewhat torn apart. His first son HEZEKIAH
O'NEAL was killed in the Civil War, near Washington D C; His second son
FREDERIK O'NEAL moved to Cumberland Maryland after the war, leaving JOHN
O'NEAL the only remaining son to carry on the family traditions, which
he did. He also furnished BERNARD O'NEAL a home in his declining years.
ELIZABETH LAUDERBAUGH, died August 22, 1874, and buried in the East View
Cemetery, Chaneysville, PA. BERNARD O'NEAL passed away July 16, 1894, and
is buried beside his wife, East View Cemetery, Chaneysville, Pennsylvania.
