| What
a beautiful old cemetery Oakdale is. We arrived there scant days after
Hurricane Charlie to find lots of trees, branches and debris down. Oakdale was easy to find. Market Street runs through the center of Wilmington and is the main street running east & west. When you come to 15th street take it 6 blocks to the north and you will run right into the cemetery. Finding Rose is a little more difficult as she is way in the back of this huge cemetery. Here's a map you can use to locate her. Joining Rose in eternal rest at Oakdale are 367 unknown confederate soldiers and such notables as the Honorable Edward B. Dudley, North Carolinas first elected Governor; Henry Bacon, architect of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C; Dr. William Crawford Willkings, believed to be the last man killed in the south in a duel; And last, but not least, David Brinkley, a pioneer of broadcast journalism, best known for NBC's weekly "Huntley-Brinkley Report" which ran from 1956-1970. |
