1. CONFEDERATE MONUMENT - There are 367 unknown confederate soldiers
buried here that were killed during the Civil War. The monument was
erected by the Ladies Memorial Association which merged and became part
of the Cape Fear Chapter No.3, Daughters of the Confederacy.
2. WILLIAM ELLERBROOK - A river boat Captain, and his faithful friend
"Boss", his dog lost their lives February 11, 1880 while helping fight
a disastrous fire at Front and Dock Streets. A monument erected to his
memory was erected by the many citizens and friends of Wilmington,
3. HONORABLE EDWARD B. DUDLEY - North Carolinas first elected Governor
by popular vote.
4. HENRY BACON - Architect and designer of the Lincoln Memorial in
Washington D.C.
5. MRS. ROSE O'NEAL GREENHOW - Confederate Secret Services Agent,
drowned off the Coast at Fort Fisher while running the Blockade.
6. LITTLE ANNIE DeROSSET - The first interment in Oakdale Cemetery,
February 1855. She was the daughter of Armand J. DeRosset, the first
president of Oakdale Cemetery.
7. DR. WILLIAM eRA WFORD WILLKINGS - Slain in a duel stemming from a
local political election in 1856. A memorial was erected by the
"Democratic Association." This is believed to be the last man killed in
the South in a political duel.
8. NANCY MARTIN - While on a round the world voyage in 1857 with her
father and brother, she became ill and died. Her body was placed in a
large cask filled with rum. While still at sea, her brother was on
watch during a storm and washed overboard. Her father then returned to
Wilmington and a decision was made to keep Nancy entombed in the cask.
Her grave is marked as "Nance" by which she was called.
9. DAVID BRINKLEY - A pioneerofbroadcastjoumalism, best known for NBC's
weekly "Huntley-Brinkley Report" from 1956-1970.
